How to Remove the Steering Wheel Assembly on a Boat

    • 1). Expose the nut in the center of the steering column. The cover in the center of the wheel is held in place by four screws--remove them with a screwdriver.

    • 2). Have an assistant hold the rim of the steering wheel tightly while you loosen the center nut with an adjustable wrench. If an assistant isn't available, slip a 2x4 through the spokes of the wheel so that one end will jam on the deck and keep the wheel from turning while you turn the nut.

    • 3). Tap the back of the steering wheel with a rubber "deadblow" hammer to loosen any corrosion that might hold the wheel to the steering shaft. Pull on the wheel, rocking it back and forth, if necessary, to remove it from the shaft.

    • 4). Disconnect the steering cables from the helm unit (the box that the steering shaft goes into) by pulling the cotter pins or other connectors from the cable connectors with a pair of pliers

    • 5). Unscrew or unbolt the four screws that hold the helm unit in place. Lower the helm unit and steering shaft through the back of the dashboard.
